Resources

This page is a incomplete collection of resources I have found useful, interesting, or fun. I am by no means an exhaustive researcher, but I do think it is important to highlight some of the materials that have been a part of my horn-playing journey.

Books

Inner Game of Music - Barry Green
Barry Green takes Tim Gallwey's revolutionary Inner Game of Tennis and relates it directly to musicians. This is a book that I tend to return to when I'm feeling a bit unmotivated, as it really is about getting to the source of what makes being a musician so incredible: truly honest and free performance.
Through the Door: A Horn Player's Journey - David Krehbiel
The life's journey of one of the greats. Not only was this an incredible read, David Krehbiel leaves us with many pearls of wisdom along the way. His prespecitve on "creative not caring" is similar to the Inner Game and really helped me to solidify the idea of being free to make honest music.
Thoughts on Playing the Horn Well - Frøydis Ree Werke
Frøydis' characteristic wit and charm is on full display as she takes us through a fast paced exploration of what we can do to play the horn well. (Play the horn more well?) This handbook is filled to the brim with good tips and tricks. There are several exercies that I've incorporated into my own routine, but she also gives us many little tid-bits of advice just generally related to music making. Check it out!
Brass Player's Cookbook - Kenneth Amis (with lots of contributors)
I love the idea of this book and I think it's executed very well. The author sought out dozens (57, to be exact) of the most accomplished and respected brass players of the day and had each one provide a "recipe" that they feel has contributed to their success. So many good ideas and tips from some really big hitters, well worth tracking down!
Horn Handbook - Verne Reynolds
The Musician's Way - Gerald Klickstein
Blow Your Own Horn - Fergus McWilliams
The Art of French Horn Playing - Phil Farkas
